Description

What: “YMCA wheelchair basketball clinic”
When: 6:00pm – 8:00pm, December 3, 2009
Where: Family YMCA of Black Hawk County
Who: 3rd through 12th graders with lower physical impairments

Jack Eherenman is coordinating a wheelchair basketball clinic with the Family YMCA of Black Hawk County. We will be introducing athletes from 3rd grade through high school with lower physical impairments to wheelchair basketball. This clinic will include instruction of the game, practice drills, and time for a scrimmage.

All participating athletes must be mostly independent, with good hand coordination, good cognitive skills, ability to understand instructions, and good strength to push a wheelchair up and down the court. This clinic is designed not only for youth who want to play competitively, but also those who enjoy recreational play. We hope to get the youth of Eastern Iowa with lower physical impairments involved in many things so they can become more active and “get off the couch.”

When offering youth a place to practice and play, they tend to go on to other forms of physical activities, which in turn can help them in their daily living skills. Of all young athletes, lower physical impaired athletes have fewer options for recreational play. We are hoping to reach as many young athletes as possible that would benefit from this clinic, and we will also offer options for other activities in the area.

Coaches will include Jack, and some of the Iowa Chairiots wheelchair basketball team, plus a few other coachs to be determined. We hope to have several people who can work with the athletes and give some one on one instruction through the clinics time. We will have several wheelchair basketball chairs so each athlete can have some playing time in a real basketball chair and get the feel for the game. We would like to get as much pre registration as possible as there are some questions that will have to go out to all athletes and parents. Plus Jack is available to answer questions ahead of time on the clinic. We want to make this a positive experience for all involved. Athletes can still come and register at the Y at the time of the clinic if needed. Parents and friends are welcome to come and stay or leave if necessary, but if athlete is dropped off, we need to know and have contact info, like cell phone.

To register, all athletes and volunteers that want to attend this clinic are welcome to contact Jack or the YMCA with the information listed below. Thank you.
